We are headed east on Hwy 24/285 just outside of Buena Vista for a scenic drive to Aspen Ridge. The aspens have been changing to a beautiful vibrant yellow. We hope to be in Colorado long enough to see them turn orange and ultimately red.
We turned off Hwy 24/285 almost at the summit of Trout Creek pass on FR307 and head into the mountains. The road is dirt but not too bad except for the the ocassional “wash board” but enjoying the scenery is worth getting a little dusty. We follow the signs to Aspen Ridge, take CR187 and drive through the giant rock outcroppings covered with lichen.
As we get closer to Aspen Ridge we turn onto CR185 and continue about a mile until we find that we were not able to ascend the final hill to Aspen Ridge.
We reluctantly turn around and head back. We were not disappointed with the changing colors though. Bassam Ridge’s aspens were on full display, and thats what we came here for in the first place.
We take CR188 taking us on a winding road over the mountain. It was a bit of a challenge but nothing we couldn’t handle.
CR188 looped back to CR187 which brought us back to the enormous stone outcroppings, back to FR 307 and in no time we were on Hwy 24/285 and as we cross Trout Creek Pass we’ll scout out new destinations.
