Boondocking

Boondocking at Holbrook Reservoir, near La Junta, CO.

We are making our way into eastern Colorado and after resupplying in La Junta we head for Holbrook Reservoir. The area is more or less a large gravel lot with no facilities, but the views over the reservoir are nice and cell / data service was very good on Verizon. There is a small boat ramp at the end of the gravel lot. This was a nice plays to stay. No traffic noise or disturbance of any kind, but the wanderlust just keeps us going, so on we go: Scouting Destinations.

Directions: Go west for about 5 miles on US 50 out of La Junta, turn right onto CR 24.5 at Swink. Follow CR 24.5 for about 2 1/2 miles and turn right at road FF. Holbrook Reservoir will be on the left after about half a mile.

  1. You may want to note for others since your visit in 2019 currently all Colorado State Wildlife Areas require a current valid hunting or fishing license or a SWA access pass. I stay in these areas and have had my paperwork checked a few times, I believe they catch a lot of people camping without proper paperwork because I’ve noticed they’re particularly keen on checking campers vs hunters/fisherman.
